Man United Closing In On Signing Experienced Defensive ‘Leader’

Jose Mourinho is said to be intent on signing an experienced defensive leader and, after having scoured the market, A 32-year-old Portugal international, who happens to be current Southampton defender Jose Fonte has emerged as the best and most realistic option.

However, United did discuss Leonardo Bonucci with Juventus while negotiating the Paul Pogba deal, but as expected were put off by the Italian club with Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane also turning down a move to Old Trafford.

Fonte has been a steady presence in defence with Southampton and was also in particular dependable in Portugal’s victorious Euro 2016 campaign, and now sources say Mourinho is now willing bid for the player.

Aside from wanting to add experience to his defence, the United manager is also conscious of the fact that Eric Bailly will be going to the African Nations Cup with defending champions Ivory Coast, so he wants cover in January as well.

Southampton would not stand in Fonte’s way if a bid was to come in as the Portuguese International also had his say on the transfer as he said :

If the interest in there, it is a reason to be flattered to be associated with a club like Manchester United.

But I have a contract with Southampton, and I’m just focused on my work, to make a great season.

I will not deny that Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and that it makes me happy to be associated with it. But to be Manchester United’s player is a big difference.
